Born in Weatherford, Texas, Lorena Baker (1897-1990) graduated with a BS in Library Science from the University of Illinois in 1933, and was head of the Loan department at the University of Texas library for forty years. The University of Texas at Austin (UT) was established in 1883, and the next year the UT Library opened quarters in the Old Main Building.
